Why I love the Apple Photos Library

What I wanted was an easy system to keep my photos safe, organised and very private.

As I took a deep  dive into the world of Apple photos, I learnt that photo organising is a ‘thing’ and that  there is a whole community of professional photo organisers offering a myriad of specialisms, tech and approaches.

I quickly learnt that digital media are most at risk, so this is where I started – with my iPhones, an iPad, two MacBooks and a box of thumbnails and cds.

At the beginning, I didn’t know what I was looking for.   I took several courses and spent far too much time time looking into software.  It was comforting to know that I wasn’t alone, but the options were overwhelming and it took me a while to find my way.

What I wanted was an easy system to keep my photos safe, organised and very private. Easy was important -  easy to use, easy to find my favourites and to share with my family.

After going  around the houses and creating a big pros and cons sheet, I realised that I had it all in my hand - Apple Photos and the Apple Photo Library.   If like me you have quite a few Apple devices, it makes sense to learn how to make the most of the Apple ecosystem, the way it was designed.

As I got more into it, I realised that the case for using Apple Photos and Library is a strong one:

  • It’s already in everyday use and non-scary on the tech front.  You don’t need to buy and learn to use another programme.

  • You don’t have to deal with converting, downloading or uploading photos – they are available on every device and synch via the iCloud.

  • Older images can be imported, so you are not limited to photos from your ‘Apple days’.

  • It’s easy to share with other family members and friends.

  • You can back it all up to the Time Machine by attaching an external hard drive.

“If like me you have quite a few Apple devices, it makes sense to learn how to make the most of the Apple ecosystem, the way it was designed. .”

It sounds a bit odd, but we’re an Apple family, which means together that we can take advantage of Apple Sharing.  I’m also setting a good example for my sons and helping them to look after their own photos - I don’t want all their teenage memories to disappear on social media apps . . .

I can help you create and organise your Apple Photo Library so that it is the hub of your family photo collection.   I can do it for you so you have a perfectly curated photo collection or I can teach you how to do it yourself.   Or  both!  Some people want help creating the library, getting rid of all the duplicates and  making sure all the settings are optimal.   Then I’ll teach them how to use it and maintain their collection, so they can enjoy their photos for many years to come.
